Goniopora Coral Care Guide: Light, Flow, Feeding & Placement

Goniopora corals—often called flowerpot corals—are some of the most eye-catching animals in a reef aquarium. Their long polyps move in the current like a field of flowers, and healthy colonies can become a true centerpiece. They also do best when the aquarium gives them consistency, space, and a little patience.
Goniopora are large-polyp stony corals, or LPS corals. They are photosynthetic, but they also benefit from available food in the water column. The old reputation that every Goniopora is impossible to keep is no longer fair; many captive-grown and well-established specimens do very well. The key is to avoid treating them like decorations that can be moved around until they look right. Give them a stable home and let the coral show you what it prefers.

Start with stability
Before adding a Goniopora, make sure the aquarium is settled enough to support a stony coral. Stability matters more than chasing a single “perfect” number. A tank with small, predictable changes is usually a better home than a tank that repeatedly swings between extremes while the aquarist tries to correct it.
As a practical baseline, keep salinity close to natural seawater—about 1.025–1.026 specific gravity—and keep temperature near the normal reef range, around 78°F. Maintain alkalinity, calcium, and magnesium consistently enough to support skeletal growth. Many reef aquariums do well around 8–9 dKH alkalinity, 400–450 ppm calcium, and approximately 1,300–1,350 ppm magnesium.
Goniopora do not need an aquarium stripped of every nutrient. Aim for detectable, controlled nitrate and phosphate rather than forcing both to zero. If you change a parameter, make the correction gradually. Large, sudden changes can create more stress than the original reading.
Lighting: begin conservatively
Goniopora use light through their symbiotic algae, but they do not need to be placed directly under the brightest part of the fixture on day one. A PAR range of roughly 75–125 is a reasonable starting point for many Goniopora, but the ideal level depends on the specimen, the lighting system, and the conditions it was previously kept under.
Place a new coral in moderate light and acclimate it gradually if the aquarium is brighter than the system it came from. If the coral becomes unusually pale, stays tightly closed, or shows signs of light stress, evaluate intensity before adding more light. If it remains healthy and consistently extended, you can leave it alone; moving it repeatedly makes it harder to tell what is actually helping.
Use a PAR meter when possible, but do not let one number replace observation. Polyp extension, color, tissue condition, and response over time are all useful information.
Flow: gentle movement, not a direct blast
The flowing motion is one of the reasons people love Goniopora. The goal is enough circulation to keep waste and detritus from settling on the coral while allowing the polyps to extend and sway naturally.
Use moderate, indirect, and changing flow. Avoid placing the coral directly in front of a powerful wavemaker at close range. Violent whipping, constant retraction on the side facing the pump, or damaged-looking tissue are signs that the flow should be adjusted. On the other hand, a dead spot can allow debris to collect around the base and between the polyps.
If detritus settles on the coral, use a turkey baster or similar tool to gently lift it away. Do not use a sharp, high-pressure stream directly against extended tissue.
Choose a safe placement
Goniopora can expand much farther than the skeleton or frag plug suggests. A small frag may become a surprisingly large, moving colony when it is fully open. Give it a stable surface where it cannot tumble into another coral, and leave several inches of open space around the expected extension.
A lower or middle position is often a good place to begin, but actual PAR and flow are more important than height in the aquarium. Avoid placing the coral where sand can constantly blow onto it, where it can rub against rock, or where a fish or invertebrate repeatedly knocks it over.
Leave space between Goniopora and neighboring corals. Individual colonies can sting or irritate one another, and long polyps may reach farther than expected after the lights go out. When planning a “Goni garden,” treat each colony as an individual and watch for contact rather than assuming similar-looking corals are automatically compatible.
Feeding Goniopora
Photosynthesis supplies part of a Goniopora’s energy, but supplemental feeding can support long-term health and growth. Fine particulate foods are generally more useful than large chunks because Goniopora have relatively small mouths and do not always show a dramatic feeding response.
Start with a small amount of fine coral food or plankton-based food once or twice per week. Feed when the polyps are extended. You can turn the pumps down briefly so food stays in the area, then restore normal flow after about 10–15 minutes. Some aquariums and specimens may benefit from more frequent feeding, while others receive enough nutrition from the overall system.
Do not assume that more food is always better. Excess food can push nitrate and phosphate higher and create algae or water-quality problems. Adjust the amount to the size of the coral and the aquarium’s ability to export nutrients. If the coral does not visibly grab food, that does not automatically mean the feeding was wasted; fine particles and dissolved nutrients can still be useful. Keep the routine light, consistent, and measurable.
Acclimating a new Goniopora
- Dim the aquarium lights or use a gradual light-acclimation setting for the first several days.
- Match temperature and salinity carefully using the acclimation approach recommended by your coral supplier.
- Inspect the coral, plug, and crevices for unwanted hitchhikers before placing it in the display.
- Set it on a stable surface with indirect flow and plenty of room to expand.
- Give it time. Some retraction after shipping or a change in water is normal.
Quarantine is the strongest way to observe new coral before it enters a display aquarium. If you use a coral dip, choose a product labeled for corals and follow its directions exactly. A dip is not a substitute for inspection, quarantine, or good acclimation, and a freshly shipped coral may need time to recover before additional handling.
Common Goniopora problems
Polyps stay closed
Check for shipping stress, a recent move, excessive light, direct flow, fish or invertebrate irritation, and sudden changes in salinity or alkalinity. Make one adjustment at a time and avoid relocating the coral every day.
Debris collects on the tissue
Look for a dead spot or a flow pattern that pushes waste toward the colony. Gently baste the debris away and adjust the flow so the water moves across the coral without blasting it.
The coral becomes pale or starts losing tissue
Test the basic parameters and compare them with recent readings instead of relying on one test. Check light intensity, temperature stability, salinity, alkalinity, and nutrient availability. Tissue loss can progress quickly, so isolate the coral if practical and get experienced local or professional advice rather than waiting for a miracle additive.
The coral is not growing
Growth is a long-term measurement. Confirm that the coral is receiving appropriate light and flow, is not being stung or disturbed, and has access to stable calcium and alkalinity. Keep a consistent routine and photograph the coral periodically so small changes are easier to see.
How to choose a healthy Goniopora
Whenever possible, choose a specimen with intact tissue, good color, and strong, even extension. A coral that is temporarily closed after transport is not automatically unhealthy, but visible recession, bare white skeleton, or damage around the edges deserves caution. Established captive-grown specimens can be a predictable choice, although the condition of the individual coral still matters most.
