Torch Coral Placement, Flow, and Compatibility Guide

Torch corals are popular Euphyllia because their long, flowing tentacles add movement and color to a reef aquarium. Good placement is about balancing light, flow, stability, and space.
Start with moderate lighting
Most torch corals do well under moderate reef lighting. Begin lower in the aquarium or at reduced intensity, then adjust gradually while watching the coral’s response. Sudden changes in intensity can stress a newly introduced coral.
Use moderate, indirect flow
The tentacles should move naturally without being pinned to one side or whipped sharply. Flow that is too weak can allow debris to settle, while direct, forceful flow can keep the coral retracted and damage tissue against the skeleton.
Give torch corals room
Torch corals can extend beyond their skeleton and may sting neighboring corals. Leave generous space around the colony and account for future growth. Do not assume that every Euphyllia can safely touch another; aggression and compatibility can vary.
Keep reef parameters stable
Consistency is more important than chasing one perfect number. Avoid rapid changes in salinity, temperature, alkalinity, calcium, or nutrient levels. Test regularly and make corrections slowly.
Feeding and observation
Torch corals receive energy from light but may also capture appropriately sized meaty foods. Feeding is optional in many established systems. Avoid overfeeding, and remove food that is not captured.
Signs to reconsider placement
- Persistent retraction after the normal acclimation period
- Tissue pressed hard against one side of the skeleton
- Bleaching or unusually dark coloration following a lighting change
- Contact or stinging damage involving nearby corals
